Green spaces at the Sophienterrassen

A landscape concept that combines urbanity and nature

The figures alone are impressive and demonstrate the importance of the green spaces in the design of the Sophienterrassen: a landscaping concept was realised here in which 1,800 square metres of hedges and 40 newly planted trees are located in an open space of 10,000 square metres. In addition, there are existing solitary trees, some of which may date back to the Wilhelminian period. Together, they create a park and garden landscape of stylistic diversity that invites you to take a stroll and discover it or simply to stand in silent wonder at the wonders of nature.

Principles of park design

Sculpted by nature by masters of their craft

The outdoor facilities of the Sophienterrassen were designed by WES LandschaftsArchitektur, one of Germany's leading landscape architecture firms. Under the direction of Wolfgang Betz and Peter Schatz, the team designed the outdoor spaces according to functional and aesthetic principles, with the utmost expertise and attention to detail. In doing so, lines of sight and the integration of neighbouring trees to visually expand the area were just as important as the choice of almost invisible enclosures, the inspiring design of access points, paths, squares, fountains and furnishings. One example is the outstanding way in which the Alster has been incorporated into the park's visual axes. The Alster foreshore appears as if it were already part of the Sophienterrassen.

Choice of materials and plants

The fine art of garden design

The perfect interplay between the built environment and natural elements is a central feature of the Sophienterrassen and contributes significantly to the quality of life. In particular, the hedge parterres and the square, a central square in the neighbourhood, provide places of retreat and meeting places, protect privacy and promote neighbourly community. In the urban area between townhouses and city villas, paving and lawns combine in an artistic way, allowing new discoveries and interpretations at every turn. A mix of brass and grey-green granite runs through the outdoor areas, complemented by polished stones that catch the light and connect the natural environment with the architecture.

Easy care and durable

Because beauty should endure

When designing the green spaces, great emphasis was placed on sustainability and ease of maintenance. The selection of plants and materials was based on the aspect of longevity and low maintenance requirements, to ensure that the facilities retain their beauty for years to come. These include robust hedges and shrubs, as well as resistant lawn varieties that withstand the changing seasons and always offer a well-kept appearance. This strategic planning ensures that the residents of Sophienterrassen can enjoy an attractive and reassuring environment for many years to come.
